TEXT DECORATION
INTRODUCTION
Hello student and welcome to today's lesson.
In this lesson, we will like to discuss and practice what Text decoration is and why it is important to use Text decoration in Microsoft office word.
WHAT IS TEXT DECORATION?
Text Decoration is an editing feature located in second place on the Home tab ribbon titled FONT. its objective is to make text look fancier and appealing, draw the reader's attention to specific parts of the document or lay emphasis by making the text italic, bold, changing color, or underlining it.
Some of the features we intend to look at are Font, Bold, Italic, Underline, Font size, Text highlight, and font color.
FONT
Fonts are the complete set of characters—that is, letters, numbers, and symbols/icons—within a typeface, which is the design of the characters. For example, Arial is the typeface; Arial Bold, Italic, Narrow, Extended (Wide), Black, etc., are the fonts, or font Family.
- Type the text you want to effect this change.
- Highlight the text by moving your cursor close to the beginning or end of the word. When the cursor changes to the letter I, click and drag over the word.
- Move the cursor to the FONT group on the Home tab ribbon and click on the arrow close to the rectangle with the word calibri.
- Select from the drop-down list a font type of your choice.
- Click on it and click on an empty space to remove the highlight.
BOLD
Bold, boldface or bold font creates the appearance of darker text by applying a thicker stroke weight to the letters. Using bold text in a body paragraph helps emphasize a remark or comment. To do this, please follow the steps below
- Type the word or words you want to apply the effect to.
- Highlight the word or words
- Move your cursor to the FONT group on the HOME tab ribbon.
- Click on the letter B as shown in the picture below.
- Click an empty space to remove the highlight.
ITALIC
Italic is a typeface or font style that slants text evenly to the right. This is also done to lay emphasis on the text. To do this, follow the steps below
- Type the word or words you want to effect the change to.
- Highlight the word or words
- Move the cursor to the FONT group on the HOME tab ribbon.
- Select and click on the letter I
- Click on an empty space to remove the highlight.

UNDERLINE
An underline is a section of text in a document where the words have a line running beneath them. To apply this feature, follow the steps below
- Type the word or words you want to effect the changes to.
- Highlight the word or words.
- Move the cursor to the FONT group on the HOME tab ribbon and click on the letter U
- Click an empty area to remove the highlight.
FONT SIZE
Font size or text size is how large the characters displayed on a screen or printed on a page are.
- Type the word or words you want to effect the changes to.
- Highlight the word or words.
- Move the cursor to the FONT group on the HOME tab ribbon and click on the arrow beside the number 11.
- Select and click on a preferred number in the drop-down list.
- Click an empty area to remove the highlight.
TEXT HIGHLIGHT
This is formatting that allows a user to change the background color of a text from the default white to the preferred color. This is done through the following steps.
- Type the text you prefer to apply the change to.
- highlight the text by dragging your cursor over it.
- Move your cursor to the FONT group in the HOME tab ribbon and click on the brush with the yellow bar under it.
- You can click on the arrow beside it to select a color of your choice.
- Click an empty area to remove the highlight.
FONT COLOR
Microsoft Word allows you to change the Font color of your text to a preferred color of your choice. This can be done through the following steps
- Type the text you want to effect this change.
- Highlight the text by moving your cursor close to the beginning or end of the word. When the cursor changes to the letter I, click and drag over the word.
- Move the cursor to the FONT group on the Home tab ribbon and click on the arrow close to the letter A with a bar under it as shown in the picture below.
- Select your preferred color and click on it to effect change on the text or word you highlighted.
- Click an empty area to remove the highlight.
